Dear Members and Friends of First United Methodist Church of Elgin,

I am pleased to announce that Reverend William Bernard Sandberg (affectionately known as Bernie) has been appointed as our new Senior Pastor for an interim period. Pastor Sandberg is a retired pastor, who is a United Methodist Elder. Pastor Sandberg comes to us with a wealth of experience which has included appointments in both large and small communities, which include San Marcos UMC, Epworth San Antonio, Berkley UMC, which he started as a new church plant, Harlingen: Wesley UMC, Port Lavaca UMC, and St. Matthews UMC in San Antonio. Pastor Sandberg has also served as the District Superintendent for the Victoria District.

Bernie has served in almost every capacity and type of church along with Conference leadership, including a new church start which makes him aware of most dynamics of pastoral ministry. Bernie is a delightful, introspective, caring, and responsible spirt, with a stellar work ethic. Bernie specializes in pastoral care. When you are in his presence, he has a way of making you know that you are the main focus. Bernie is married to Barbara, who is in nursing care, and he has two adult sons.

Bernie’s first official day at FUMC Elgin will be July 1, and his first Sunday to preach will be July 2. He is looking forward to meeting all of you!

As United Methodists, we affirm with faithful understanding that we, the Church, are the Body of Christ. It is Christ’s sustaining Spirit that will guide us in the days ahead. We will trust and rely on Christ’s presence and grace during this time of transition.

Please join me in welcoming Pastor Bernie to our church family!
